Adrenal Fatigue is a group of related signs and symptoms (a syndrome) that stem from the adrenal function being below normal. It can be difficult to determine as it mimics other health issues that may or may not be related to adrenal fatigue. There are accurate saliva hormone test that give clear indications of the current state of the adrenal glands.
It has been suggested that Adrenal Fatigue will affect approximately 80% of people at some point in their lives. Some people will experience reoccurring bouts of adrenal fatigue while others experience chronic debilitating symptoms of adrenal fatigue for long periods. These people may take several months to get their health and wellness fully restored.
Regardless if your adrenal fatigue is mild or severe there is hope.
The Adrenal glands are two triangular glands that sit on top of the kidneys. The adrenal glands produce the hormones cortisol and DHEA, Cortisol is the hormone that helps in responding and coping with stress, trauma, infections and environment extremes. Cortisol also increases energy and metabolism, helps to regulate blood pressure and decreases inflammation. DHEA helps protect against heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis. It can also increase and enhance energy levels, libido, memory and immunity and protects against the effects of stress.
Adrenal fatigue involves overworked, damaged or depleted adrenal glands. Stress is one of the biggest factors in adrenal fatigue.
Adrenal fatigue is implicated in a long list of ailments:
- Patchy hair loss
- Lowered immune system
- Chronic fatigue
- Low blood sugar
- Poor concentration/memory
- Poor sleep
Life Events and Actions that Deplete Adrenals
There are Three Stages of Stress or Adrenal Fatigue
1) The “fight or flight’ (alarm) response that happens in response to a confrontation with a stressful situation. This causes the stress hormones to be produced directing blood toward the muscles and limbs to be ready to flee.
2) When the stressful situation subsides the stress hormones revert back to normal production
3) The adaptive phase involves learning to cope with the perceived threat (stressor). The production of cortisol increases and can lead to headaches, insomnia, hypertension
4) Exhaustion occurs when the capacity for adaptation is overwhelmed. And is characterized by depletion of energy. The exhaustion phase of continual stress can eventually lead to adrenal insufficiency
The Toxic Effect of Excessive Stress
- Adrenal Fatigue
- High blood pressure
- Digestive disturbances
- Depleted immune system – increased susceptibility to infections
- Chronic Fatigue, fatigue
- Excessive stress may lead to Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis
- Muscle weakness, muscular tics
- Anxiety, depression, fat cravings, headaches, memory loss, sugar cravings, insomnia
- Hyperventilation, sinusitis
- Male impotence reduced sexual desire
- Hair loss, hives, Psoriasis

What is an Alkaline Diet?
Your diet, what you eat and drink can and does effect the acid/alkaline balance in your body. The other factors that affect your acid/alkaline balance are things like stress, and inherent predisposition.
The human body works most efficiently in a slightly alkaline environment at around pH 7.4.
The pH scale is a measure of acidity and alkalinity and runs from 0 for pure acid to 14 for pure alkali. Neutral is at pH 7.
Certain types of food are acidic causing our body to try and neutralize the excess acid with alkaline minerals such as sodium, calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron.
Blood pH must always be between pH 7.35 and 7.45 but the pH of our urine can vary over a broader pH range without being lethal.
Our diet and the different foods we eat leave an ash or residue in our system. The residues can be acid, alkaline or neutral.
The main foods that leave acid residues are animal proteins and other sources of protein, which are generally very high in our diets nowadays. It is important to remember that there is nothing wrong with protein, it is needed in our diets and provides essential amino acids.
Research has shown that people with a more alkaline internal environment absorb up to 20 times more oxygen than acidic bodies. It was also found that diseased bodies are acidic bodies which repel oxygen and attract overgrowth of parasites, whereas healthy bodies are alkaline bodies that absorb a high amount of oxygen. Experiments by Dr Warburg have shown that malignant cells proliferate and grow in acid conditions with no oxygen but die in conditions with plenty of oxygen, calcium and alkaline pH.
“HEALTH IS ALKALINITY.”
TO BUILD AND MAINTAIN OUR “ALKALINE RESERVE”
WE SHOULD EAT 80% ALKALI-FORMING FOOD AND 20% ACID-FORMING FOODS.
Maintaining your acid reserve as you can see is very much within your power, water plays a big role. Water flushes the system and removes toxins. The ideal amount of water depends on your physical activity. If your work is not very active and you don’t do active sports you need a minimum of 8 glasses or 2 litres of water a day. If you work physically or have a very active sport you will need to increase this amount.
Part of a regular Naturopathic consultation is to review your daily intake of food and liquids and suggest some health improving changes if necessary. I like to make changes gradually and meet my clients where they are and don’t expect them to be ‘get it right’ from the beginning. It’s a learning process and one that take time, but when they feel better, they tend to want more! This signals the chance to implement different new wellness protocols.

Natural Hormone Relief
Female hormones have the power to make us feel beautiful,
powerful and sexy…..like a women.
They can turn our world up-side-down and leave us feeling:
Powerless, Confused, Frumpy, Fat, Unmotivated, Angry
and somewhat ‘crazy’;
anything but beautiful and sexy!
(sort of a bit more like a raving wild cat..dare I say, I have been there ( I hate to admit!))
The unfortunate truth is that too many women have their lives governed by hormonal disturbances, some minor; some disturbance can have a major impact on the quality of life and can also have major impact on your health, your relationships and your ability to ‘cope’.
My name is Katherine, yes I am a gal, and in the past have suffered hormone imbalance, (and boy did those around me suffer as well!). But that is a thing of the past, a little about me.: A Naturopath, Nutritionist, Herbalist and Researcher with a passion for teaching how to heal your body naturally. Working with women’s health issues including hormone imblance that can lead to infirtility and many other health problems, I have to say some of the joys I get are: meeting a new little much desired baby who in part is here with the help of natural hormone balance. Helping menopausal women who contact me and with the feeling like they are going crazy, restore harmony and get back in control of their lives. and so much more I could go on for pages but let’s skip to what is important for you today.
